The Film Critique
Today, it is said that ‘film is the literature of our time’. This workshop is a response to the demand and interest in viewing films and filmmaking with a more critical eye. This one-week workshop explores the dominant theories and genres of film, applying them to current and past film classics. It is an analysis and critique of selected films and certain film auteurs. All of the layers of these films are analyzed to gain a holistic perspective into the psychology of a particular film or director. Films from a variety of genres and filmmakers from around the world are examined and critiqued. They are viewed in their historical contexts and studied for their influence on other films, and on society in general. The workshop requires intense screening and active participant discussion. By week’s end, students come away with a keener understanding of what makes a film stand out and with sharper observation skills.
