Editing the TV News Magazine
Jun 13 - Jun 19
Turn a news story into a finely crafted piece for TV in the tradition of the award winning CBS News program Sunday Morning.
As traditional news shows lose viewership, the television newsmagazine is becoming increasingly popular. How is a hard news story transformed into a news magazine feature? This workshop examines creative pieces from the CBS Sunday Morning show to 60 Minutes to PBS NOW to CNN Presents as examples to illustrate how in-depth reporting, natural sound and pacing contribute to a deeper and more compelling story. The class focuses on shot selection, music, effects, and how adding the right sound to key moments enhances a script. Students should bring samples of their own work to critique, and if desired, material to create a newsmagazine feature using the techniques discussed in class. Students without material are provided with raw footage to be crafted into a feature story. The class focuses on reworking and experimenting in order to enhance the storytelling and production value of the segment. Students leave with a new set of tools for creative newsmagazine editing.
