Basic Video Camera and Technology

The world of digital video is evolving with constant updates to the cameras. This course is for emerging video professionals who want to become technically proficient and creatively adept with the latest digital video cameras. Through lectures, demonstrations, screenings, field exercises, editing sessions, and critiques, this class covers the world of digital cinematography, video technology and the creative use of various video cameras. High definition video photography and television standards, production methodology and electronic image processing are covered, and students learn to determine iso and calculate exposure through the use of on-board menus and exposure meters. Students learn to tune various cameras including the Canon XHA1, XHG1, and XLH1. The class sets up interviews, covers scenes, works with continuity, and shoots B-roll. Image quality, composition, pov, lens selection, camera moves and basic visual storytelling techniques are thoroughly explored. Level 1 students must take the Set Etiquette and Safety Crash Course before this workshop. The Basic Lighting and Grip and the Basic Video Production workshops are great sequels to this workshop.
