16mm Film Production

In an increasingly digital world, film continues to be the preferred choice of many filmmakers. This course covers the basic mechanical, optical and physical principles that make motion pictures possible, as well as how film cameras and film emulsions work. Through lectures, demonstrations and exercises, students learn how to expose, process and print film. The class learns how to create a specific look using the latest 16mm Kodak film stocks and combinations of different shutter speeds and angles, and frame rates. Each student gains experience as a member of a film crew and learns how to be a part of a professional team in real world situations by working as a director of photography, camera operator, first and second assistant camera, grip and electrician. Participants shoot exercises and scenes, including interiors, exteriors, day and night, on 16mm film with critiques from the faculty. It is possible for students to produce a sample suitable for his or her reel.
