The Personal Project: Creative Lighting, Style & Storytelling in St. Petersburg, Russia

Study and work alongside Russian photographers at the State Russian Center of Photography, ROSPHOTO, in St. Petersburg.

Arlene CollinsExperience St. Petersburg from the inside, working in conjunction with local photographers, while exploring this historic city. Through formal lectures, critiques and on-location demonstrations, students will learn how to photograph in a variety of challenging lighting situations while developing their style. Lectures and demonstrations include working in low light conditions and at night, using strobe to create a ‘natural’ look, learning how to document a foreign culture and how to produce a photo-essay that has impact.

Located in the heart of St. Petersburg, ROSPHOTO is Russia’s premier center of photography. Founded in 2002, ROSPHOTO exhibits various photographic genres from the historic to the contemporary by local and international photographers. The Center has a comprehensive Russian photography archive and is currently developing an online resource of “Russian Photographic Heritage”. ROSPHOTO also supports academic research and conducts educational programs. The educational program features the Baltic Photography School, where students attend workshops conducted by internationally renowned instructors. Visit www.rosphoto.org for more information.

Participants can work together in groups or individually to pursue their projects. St. Petersburg is the perfect photographic location and offers a diverse range of photographic subjects. Possible documentary subjects include, The Vaganove Academy of Russian Ballet, The St. Petersburg State Circus, the Kuznechny Market with food and spices from Central Asia and the Caucasus, the street life of Nevesky Prospect, or you may choose to photograph the city’s classic architecture of the Hermitage, the Winter Palace, Peter and Paul Fortress and the historic Marlinsky Theater. With ROSPHOTO as a resource, you will gain access to events, activities and subjects usually only familiar and primarily accessible to the local population.

Workshop classes are held each morning at ROSPHOTO. Afternoons and evenings are reserved for on-location demonstrations and group shoots, and for students working on their personal projects. During this workshop students are encouraged to work on a long-term personal project.

Participants should plan to arrive in St. Petersburg on Saturday, May 14th. Our first class meets the following morning Sunday, May 15th at 9:00am at ROSPHOTO.  The workshop officially ends the evening of Saturday, May 21st with the final critique and farewell reception.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is for serious amateurs and professional photographers who have a working knowledge of their camera and want to photograph the eclectic Russian culture. This is an opportunity to work closely with local Russian photographers while developing a new body of work. Participants should be experienced travelers who are comfortable navigating and photographing in a foreign city.

The Workshop Fee is $2,295.00 and includes the use of the ROSPHOTO classroom and facilities, guide and location assistance from ROSPHOTO, the opening and closing receptions, and the on-location demonstrations. Participants are responsible for all their own travel arrangements including: international flights, hotels, visas, airport transfers, local transportation, meals, and private guides (if you choose).

Once you have made your initial registration, all further communication, payments, etc will be handled directly by the instructor.
