The European Portfolio: Prague & Budapest

The Prague/Budapest workshop will offer an extraordinary opportunity to discover two of the world’s most beautiful, interesting, and visually inspiring cities, and also the opportunities to be exposed to the tremendous legacy of many of the great Czech and Hungarian photographers and to be exposed to the exciting trends in modern day Czech/Hungarian photography.
The workshop will be taught and led by Peter Turnley, one of the pre-imminent visual communicators and world traveling photographers of our times. Turnley has lived in Europe, Paris, since 1978, and has spent much time working in both countries and has long been fascinated and inspired by the amazing visual traditions of such photographers as Josef Sudek, Josef Koudelka, Jan Saudek, of Czechoslovakia; and Andre Kertesz, Robert Capa, Lazlo Maholo-Nagy, and Martin Munkacsi, all native Hungarians.
The workshop will begin in Prague, on October 4. Students and Turnley will travel together by train from Prague to Budapest on Oct. 10 and then continue until Oct. 14th, concluding with dinner that evening. This will be an all-digital workshop. Students will spend many hours a day walking and photographing in the streets of these two amazingly visual cities. Each day several hours will be devoted to the workshop gathering to learn about the traditions of Czech and Hungarian photography, to review students daily work, and to listen to lectures by Turnley, and members of the Czech and Hungarian photographic communities.
Students will be pushed to create an overall Prague/Budapest portfolio. There will be an emphasis on street photography, and students will be pushed to explore the rich city life and light of these two amazing cities.
Students taking this workshop need to bring at least one digital camera with at least one wide angle lens, preferably with an aperture of F 2.8 or faster. Other lenses are optional and students are encouraged to bring a backup digital camera. Students must also bring a laptop computer, and should have an editing program download to their computer called Photomechanic made by Camerabits, which can be download for free on a trial basis.
The light and life of both of these cities will offer an unforgettable human and photographic experience for workshop students, and the timing of the workshop in early fall should be an exceptional time of the year for photographing these two Eastern European cities so rich in photographic tradition.
