Book Arts Residency (WS)

Spend a month in Maine working with master book artists to create hand-printed and bound books.

In this month-long residency program, students have the opportunity of working on individual projects under the guidance of renowned book artists. The month begins with faculty consultations to define a course of study that will result in either a single large project or a series of smaller projects to be completed during the residency. Students work in a comprehensive book arts facility that includes Vandercook Proofing presses, a large assortment of both metal foundry and wood type, a complete bookbinding studio with a wide assortment of binding cloth and stamping materials. Visiting faculty include book artists in the Midcoast area with expertise in all aspects of the book arts from design and printing to bookbinding and presentation. Projects may run the gamut from photographic and typographic collage and case making to traditional printing and binding of handmade books. Students are encouraged to consult with the lead faculty member prior to the residency so that specific projects can be planned for in advance.
