Explore the broad range of creative possibilities in bookmaking including binding, letterpress, and more.

In a world where digital technologies increasingly predominate, looking at traditional methods and forms can inform a more grounded way to explore creative possibilities for artists. Using the school’s new Book Arts Studio, students in this workshop use handwritten words, bookbinding techniques and equipment, as well as letterpress printing to get a broad introduction to the book arts. Word and line spacing as well as text and image are explored as they relate to book formats. Several book structures are studied including two that are sewn and an accordion style with variations. Paper cases for books are also examined. Methods for planning books, their content and how that affects the form are discussed. Participants leave the workshop having created one or more fully handmade books clearly showing the mark of the hand and gesture in a digital age.
