Teaching Assistant:  Photo/Digital

The Teaching Assistant is a crucial element in the successful dynamic of the workshops. It is an exciting, demanding, completely hands-on job, providing invaluable insights and rich experience to young and enthusiastic professionals. Teaching assistants work with faculty in the Photography, Digital, Film, Multimedia, Youth Program and Book Arts workshops, and may assist the Master Classes. They are responsible for the learning environment in the classes, to keep the class on schedule, conduct demonstrations, help individual students with equipment and procedures, and assist the faculty. Teaching assistants are also the liaison between the faculty, the students, and the Programs Office who must keep lines of communication open at all times, as well as understands the limitations and potential of each workshop. Constant contact with students and instructors requires good people skills. All teaching assistants will also take care of the classroom and its security. Be comfortable working with all ages, including teenagers. Applicants should possess teaching experience, be patient, understanding and have a generous and helpful attitude. Media teachers, graduate and recent graduate students make ideal teaching assistants.

  • Digital and Photography teaching assistants must have knowledge of the Macintosh operating system, Photoshop, Lightroom, Powerpoint, Keynote, and Final Cut Pro. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers, printers, color calibration and Projectors is also required.
  • Film and Multimedia teaching assistants must be knowledgeable with the use of all film and video equipment from the camera to lighting, to electrical, to software issues. They help with preproduction, paperwork, casting, and locations. They oversee field production, and are in charge of, and responsible for all safety and set etiquette in production. Experience with MAC OSX, Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Avid and Adobe Premiere software is required. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers and network helpful.
  • Book Arts teaching assistants must be knowledgeable in their craft both in the Letterpress studio as well as digitally. Teaching Assistants must have knowledge of MACOSX, Photoshop and Lightroom. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers and network helpful.
  • Youth teaching assistants work with the Young Artist participants in the High School Photographer, Filmmakers, Multimedia, Book Arts, Digital Artists and Actors summer programs. Students range in age from 14 to 18 years. The Young Artist Program classes are held in two week intervals. Experience working with teens in an educational environment is a plus. Teaching Assistants in the Young Artists program must have the requisite skills outlined for the Photography / Filmmaking and Multimedia positions.

Most Teaching Assistants will be hired for at least a 6 to 8 week period.  Teaching assistants will be assigned the class they will work with the week prior to the class commencing. (Employment dates posted are when Teaching Assistants may be needed.  Actual dates of hire will vary per individual hired.)

Photography Program Intern

The Photography Program Intern works directly with the Program Office Staff.  This intern is responsible for assisting with various Program Office activities, including providing campus tours, assisting with the Gallery, helping to organize and produce special events. The Program Intern will also be involved with helping students where needed, and may directly assist classes. Applicants for this position should have experience with assisting courses, and have some experience as related to photography and/or multimedia. The value of this position is the exposure and familiarity it provides with all aspects and wide variety of responsibilities in and across all MMW programs.  Please refer to the Teaching Assistant job description for more information regarding required skills.

Photo Lab Manager

This individual oversees the management and day-to-day operations of the student B&W labs.  Duties include supervising the lab staff, teaching basic lab and safety procedures, ordering and maintaining chemistry, keeping an inventory of lab equipment, maintaining lab facilities and equipment, tracking an operational budget and maintaining the DEP files, hazardous waste disposal and silver recovery.  This individual also coordinates with the lab sponsors to obtain equipment and supplies.  The Lab Manager attends the weekly production meeting to coordinate lab schedules and instructor’s needs for demonstrations and supplies.  The Lab Manager must have experience and working knowledge of all photographic processes, equipment and procedures, along with mechanical and electrical aptitude and the ability to organize and work collaboratively with people.

Photo Lab Technician(s)

The Photo Lab Technicians work with the Lab Manager in the daily operation of the B&W Photo Lab, mixing chemistry, processing/contacting/printing student work, and maintaining lab equipment. This position requires experience in a commercial lab, and involves a flexible work schedule with nighttime and weekend hours. Note:  Employment dates subject to change.

Photo Lab Intern(s)

Interns assist the Lab Manager in the operation of the student darkrooms, mixing chemistry, cleaning, organizing and preparing student demos for workshop classes. Interns also assist in the B&W Photo Lab. You will gain experience processing, contacting and printing student work. Intern schedules may include some night and weekend work. Previous darkroom experience is not mandatory but encouraged.

Studio Manager

The Studio Manager oversees the operation, equipment, safety and security of our photo studio.  Applicants must have at least two years experience working in a commercial studio or equivalent, knowledge of studio operations, familiarity with all types of studio lighting, cameras and grip equipment.  Responsibilities include scheduling studio use, inventory, location scouting, model time cards, equipment checkout / return, maintenance, sponsor gear and end of season sales.  Instruction and demonstration of lighting and related equipment is necessary.  Management and good communication skills are necessary for working with and training the studio intern. The studio manager is also the teaching assistant for all studio classes. Good communication, people skills and a friendly hard working attitude is necessary. Involves weekend and evening hours.  Note: Employment dates are subject to change depending on enrollment of workshops.

Studio Intern

This individual works with the Studio Manager organizing equipment, inventory, checking in and out equipment, studio scheduling, student paperwork, model releases and keeping the studio organize.  Good communication, people skills and a friendly hard working attitude is necessary.

Digital Services Department Manager

The Digital Services Department Manager oversees the Digital Services Department Staff in the processing, contacting and printing of student work.  The manager works with instructors and meets with classes each Monday morning to discuss rules and regulations of the Digital Services Department.  The manager is responsible for training the Digital Services Department staff, scheduling staff hours, ordering supplies, and maintaining the printing systems both in the Digital Services Department and in classrooms. The DSD is responsible for the processing of all student, staff and custom printing, equipment inventory, all equipment checkout and appropriate return, as well as working with the IT department to set up the digital labs, calibrate classroom computers and projectors each week. The Digital Services Department Manger works with the Media Specialist to prepare student images for the weekly celebration of work. The Manager must have experience with Photoshop, Lightroom, scanning, digital printing, and color management.  Experience working in commercial customer service or management is required. This position will involve working evenings and weekends and requires excellent organization and communication skills. The Digital Services Department Manager is assisted by the Digital Services Department Tech's and Intern.

Digital Services Department Tech(s)

The Digital Service Dept. Tech works with the Digital Services Department Manager in the daily operation of the Digital Services Department processing/contacting/printing student work, providing hardware and software technical support to digital classes and maintaining Digital Services Department equipment and inventory. This position requires experience in a commercial lab, troubleshooting skills, color management, excellent organization, communication skills and a flexible work schedule with nighttime and weekend hours. Evening slideshow presentation attendance may be necessary to provide digital support on Monday and Tuesday nights.  Position hire and end dates may be staggered.

June 2 – September 7

Digital Services Department Intern

This individual assists the Digital Teaching Assistants to run workshops, providing tech support and troubleshooting software/hardware issues for Macintosh computers. Scanning film and prints, running errands, photocopying, keeping the labs clean and organized as well as maintaining and operating Digital Service Department equipment. Macintosh software/hardware computer skills, knowledge in Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign is encouraged.  This position may involve some night and weekend hours.

IT Manager

The IT Manager heads up seasonal IT support services for all departments of the Workshops + College. Works with the Director of Communications to ensure information technology needs are met throughout the organization. The right candidate will be familiar with both PC and Macintosh computers including graphics, post production and business software, networking, printer and post production configurations. The IT Department works in harmony with Digital Services Department to support all digital workshops and College courses, student and administration computers, software, servers and networks. Together these departments work to oversee implementation and maintenance of the school’s inventory and asset management systems. The successful applicant needs to be able to take initiative in solving problems and work as a team player in a student-centered environment. Moving computers and installing software is a requirement of the job, so the successful applicant must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. Weekend hours are required for classroom setup.

Communications & IT Intern(s)

The Communications & IT Intern will work with the Director of Communications and  IT Manager and should have good working knowledge of computers, both PC and Macs.  He or she will also be a problem solver and a team player, able to lift 30 lbs.  During part of the week duties will include helping with print packet preparation, website updates and image/video asset management. Required weekend hours will include computer lab hardware and software setup. This is an excellent opportunity to learn many aspects of digital information management in the workflow of a fast-paced educational institution.

Locations & Talent Coordinator

This position works closely with both the Program Offices, coordinating locations, actors and models requirements for the film, photo and multimedia workshops.  This individual works with local landlords to secure locations and with instructors and teaching assistants to ensure locations are restored at the conclusion of each shoot. You will arrange for the required number of actors for film production classes each week and work with the student services and the Travel & Hospitality manager to arrange their accommodations. You will also work with the Photo program to secure models for the classes that require them.  This position requires strong organizational and communications skills and a head for details and follow-through.

Locations & Talent Intern

The Locations & Talent Intern works closely with the Location & Talent Coordinator to ensure that all workshops have the appropriate locations, models and actors.  This position works closely with the Program Offices, coordinating locations and actor requirements for the busy workshops season while maintaining and updating the information databases. This position requires strong organizational and communications skills and a head for details and follow-through.

Gallery Intern

Maine Media Workshops Gallery, 18 Central St. Rockport, Maine and Maine Media Workshops PhoPa Gallery, 132 Washington Avenue, Portland Maine are seeking LOCAL interns!Maine Media Workshops Gallery and The PhoPa Gallery are seeking interns.

This intern must live locally within commuting distance to either Portland or Rockport/Camden.  He or she will assist the Gallery Manager and PhoPa gallery by monitoring the gallery, assisting customers, showing work, researching exhibiting artist and making sales. This intern will be one who is currently pursuing a degree in photography or related field, and is passionate about the arts.  You will assist with various tasks including but not limited to conversing with patrons, sales of art, inventory keeping, and marketing outreach. In addition, the intern will assist in the organization and production of gallery openings and talks, assisting in the setting up and taking down of gallery exhibits as well as participating in any opening receptions. This intern must be detail oriented, have the ability to multitask, be highly reliable, have a general knowledge in commonly used office equipment, art handling and electronic media, an interest in photography and to work in a gallery, along with a positive, caring and enthusiastic personality is required.
