Teaching Assistant: Film/Multimedia

The Teaching Assistant is a crucial element in the successful dynamic of the workshops. It is an exciting, demanding, completely hands-on job, providing invaluable insights and rich experience to young and enthusiastic professionals. Teaching assistants work with faculty in the Photography, Digital, Film, Multimedia, Youth Program and Book Arts workshops, and may assist the Master Classes. They are responsible for the learning environment in the classes, to keep the class on schedule, conduct demonstrations, help individual students with equipment and procedures, and assist the faculty. Teaching assistants are also the liaison between the faculty, the students, and the Programs Office who must keep lines of communication open at all times, as well as understands the limitations and potential of each workshop. Constant contact with students and instructors requires good people skills. All teaching assistants will also take care of the classroom and its security. Be comfortable working with all ages, including teenagers. Applicants should possess teaching experience, be patient, understanding and have a generous and helpful attitude. Media teachers, graduate and recent graduate students make ideal teaching assistants.

  • Digital and Photography teaching assistants must have knowledge of the Macintosh operating system, Photoshop, Lightroom, Powerpoint, Keynote, and Final Cut Pro. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers, printers, color calibration and Projectors is also required.
  • Film and Multimedia teaching assistants must be knowledgeable with the use of all film and video equipment from the camera to lighting, to electrical, to software issues. They help with preproduction, paperwork, casting, and locations. They oversee field production, and are in charge of, and responsible for all safety and set etiquette in production. Experience with MAC OSX, Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Avid and Adobe Premiere software is required. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers and network helpful.
  • Book Arts teaching assistants must be knowledgeable in their craft both in the Letterpress studio as well as digitally. Teaching Assistants must have knowledge of MACOSX, Photoshop and Lightroom. Troubleshooting skills of Macintosh computers and network helpful.
  • Youth teaching assistants work with the Young Artist participants in the High School Photographer, Filmmakers, Multimedia, Book Arts, Digital Artists and Actors summer programs. Students range in age from 14 to 18 years. The Young Artist Program classes are held in two week intervals. Experience working with teens in an educational environment is a plus. Teaching Assistants in the Young Artists program must have the requisite skills outlined for the Photography / Filmmaking and Multimedia positions.

Most Teaching Assistants will be hired for at least a 6 to 8 week period.  Teaching assistants will be assigned the class they will work with the week prior to the class commencing. (Employment dates posted are when Teaching Assistants may be needed.  Actual dates of hire will vary per individual hired.)

Film Program Intern

The Film Program Intern works directly with the Program Office Staff.  This intern is responsible for assisting with various Program Office activities, including providing campus tours, assisting with the Gallery, helping to organize and produce special events. The Program Intern will also be involved with helping students where needed, and may directly assist classes. Applicants for this position should have experience with assisting courses, and have some experience as related to filmmaking and/or multimedia. The value of this position is the exposure and familiarity it provides with all aspects and wide variety of responsibilities in and across all MMW programs.  Please refer to the Teaching Assistant job description for more information regarding required skills.

Post Production Manager

The Post Production Manager is responsible for the Post Production facility and for the smooth operation of the programs using these facilities.  This position oversees the daily workings of the Post Production Department with responsibilities including: coordinating editing schedules; ensuring classes have sufficient support and equipment; producing the weekly Friday night presentation of student work and weekly DVDs of the end-of week screenings; processing dub requests and transfers; ensuring that Post Production equipment is properly maintained and accurately inventoried; ensuring that the Post Production Department is in licensing compliance for all software and that updates are current; working with the IT Manager to insure proper implementation of digital resources.  Applicants for this position must have in-depth knowledge of OS X, Final Cut Pro 7 & Final Cut Pro X, Avid Media Composer and Premiere, DVD authoring software, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and familiarity with FileMaker Pro.  Sample reel is required..  Please include URL on application.

Post Production Assistant Manager

The Assistant Manager is responsible for coordinating post equipment and editing schedules, editing with students, preparing projects for screenings, and working with the Post Production Manager to address general day-to-day activities. Additional duties include troubleshooting and technical support, maintaining the archive of student work, managing dub requests and overseeing DVD production. Advanced knowledge of Final Cut Pro 7 & Final Cut Pro X is a must; knowledge in other applications including Adobe After Effects and DVD Studio Pro is desired.  Knowledge of OS X, Avid Media Composer and Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and familiarity with FileMaker Pro is also desirable.  Sample reel is required.  Please include URL on application.

Staff Editor(s)

Staff Editors work with students to edit class projects which may include dramatic shorts and scenes, TV commercials, music videos, interviews, and documentary shorts. There is a strong educational component to this position, and staff editors teach students about the editing process as they work together to complete projects. Staff Editors also assist classes and are available for software and hardware technical support. Staff Editors gain valuable experience in editing a wide range of projects while networking with industry professionals and successful filmmakers. A strong understanding of Final Cut Pro is essential and knowledge of Adobe After Effects and DVD Studio Pro is preferred. Film Technical Manager

Oversees the daily workings of the Technical Department, including the equipment barn, the soundstage, the trailers, and helping students and faculty with all their technical needs. Duties include contacting instructors before the classes begin to assemble requested equipment lists, working with sponsors, coordinating rental and shipping of equipment, and teaching safety and the proper use of all the equipment. Duties also include keeping video and film cameras, sound, grip, and electric equipment in proper working order, check in and check outs of all production equipment, keeping track of department expenses, and managing the audio/video presentation for the Friday night screenings. Applicants must have experience working at a camera, grip and electric rental house.

Film Technical Assistant Manager

The Assistant Manager takes care of the film and video cameras, batteries, sound gear, lights, the sound stage and other production facilities. Knowledge of basic video is essential. Experience in rental houses, TV stations or production facilities is desirable. The assistant manager will check out and check in equipment packages, setup locations, handle the dolly, make repairs and maintain all the equipment and help students, faculty and classes with their technical needs.

Film Technical Intern

The Film Technical Intern helps the staff in the Film Tech Barn take care of the film and video cameras, batteries, sound gear, lights, the sound stage and other production facilities. Knowledge of basic video is essential. Experience in rental houses, TV stations or production facilities is desirable. The Intern will assist with the check out and check in equipment packages, setup locations, handle the dolly, make repairs and help maintain all the equipment and assist students, faculty and classes with their technical needs. This is an excellent opportunity for recent film school graduates to “get to know” the film industries latest equipment. Weekend hours are required for return and maintenance of equipment.

Media Producer

The Media Producer is responsible for producing content for Maine Media’s website, publications and other marketing materials. The Media Producer and post production staff produce the Friday evening student show and maintain a digital archive of all student work and slideshows.  Applicants must have professional experience in the preparation of photo and video presentations (both analog and digital), be creative, responsible and have knowledge of the practical aspects of equipment, maintenance and operation.  Editing experience and knowledge of Final Cut Pro is required.

Newman Multimedia Producer

The Newman Multimedia Producer is responsible for recording and editing the weekly Masters lectures for use on Maine Media's website. The Newman Multimedia Producer will also work closely with the Director of Marketing together with Media Producer and post production staff to produce multimedia content for the web and envision and create viral worthy content related to and about Maine Media for promotional use. Applicants must have professional experience in the preparation of photo and video presentations (both analog and digital), be creative, responsible and have knowledge of the practical aspects of equipment, maintenance and operation.  Editing experience and knowledge of Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier is required.  This position is funded by a grant from the Arnold & Augusta Newman Foundation.

June 23 – August 31

Media Producer Intern

The Media Producer Intern works closely with the Media Producer to generate content for Maine Media's website, publications and marketing materials. The qualified candidate must have experience and knowledge in the use of DSLR and video cameras. The Media producer Intern assists with assembling the Friday night student presentations.

Locations & Talent Coordinator

This position works closely with both the Program Offices, coordinating locations, actors and models requirements for the film, photo and multimedia workshops.  This individual works with local landlords to secure locations and with instructors and teaching assistants to ensure locations are restored at the conclusion of each shoot. You will arrange for the required number of actors for film production classes each week and work with the student services and the Travel & Hospitality manager to arrange their accommodations. You will also work with the Photo program to secure models for the classes that require them.  This position requires strong organizational and communications skills and a head for details and follow-through.

Locations & Talent Intern

The Locations & Talent Intern works closely with the Location & Talent Coordinator to ensure that all workshops have the appropriate locations, models and actors.  This position works closely with the Program Offices, coordinating locations and actor requirements for the busy workshops season while maintaining and updating the information databases. This position requires strong organizational and communications skills and a head for details and follow-through.
