Workshops Masters of Photography Series Features Haas, Smith

ROCKPORT, Maine – Maine Media Workshops’ summer lectures series “Masters of 20th Century Photography” offers two more installments August 15 and 22 at 4pm in Union Hall Theater. The community is invited to attend free of charge.

Ernst Haas:  Monday, August 15, Susan Danly Curator of Graphics, Photography, and Contemporary Art at the Portland Museum of Art, Craig Stevens and Todd Weinstein discuss the legendary Ernst Haas, photography master and long-time instructor at the school, and his influence on the art form. Born in Austria in 1921, Haas was both a photographer and a photojournalist influential for his innovations in color photography. The Portland Museum of Art houses Ernst Haas Memorial Collection of works by photographers including George Tice, Maggie Steber and Elizabeth Opalenik.

W. Eugene Smith: Best known as a LIFE magazine photographer in the Pacific during World War II, Smith also covered domestic and peacetime subjects with a strong eye to human suffering. Monday, August 22, Jim Hughes, longtime editor of photo magazines and photo book author, with Tim Whelan, proprietor of Tim Whelan Photography Books at Maine Media Gallery, present and discuss the images included in Hughes’ book about Smith’s life in photography, Shadow and Substance.
