ROCKPORT, Maine — The Internal Revenue Service has approved Maine Media Workshops’ (MMW) application for tax-exempt status as a nonprofit institution, opening up new possibilities for fund raising and money management for the school.
“The IRS's prompt approval of our application for tax-exempt status is a very important milestone for Maine Media Workshops. The programs we inherited as part of The Workshops are rich in content, widely respected and well-attended,” said MMW Board of Directors Chair John Claussen. “We expect them to be self-sustaining, but in order to grow our programs and invest in the future, additional sources of funds will be very useful. Tax-exempt status allows us to tap into the groundswell of enthusiasm and support we have heard from all quarters – our faculty and alumni, the Midcoast community, the State of Maine and the international photo and film communities. We are extremely enthusiastic about the opportunities presented by our approved tax-exempt status."
MMW Executive Director Charles Altschul has also announced that the school is seeking qualified applicants to staff its development office.
“We have opened the search for development staff to assist in fundraising efforts and community outreach,” said Altschul. “The development personnel will work with our exceptional staff to enhance our programs and secure a solid foundation for Maine Media Workshops as it moves toward the future.”
In the midst of its first season as a nonprofit institution, the 35-year-old school continues to offer a broad range of workshops and degree programs. MMW was created by a group of artists and community members that assumed leadership of the highly regarded visual arts school in March of this year. Currently wrapping up a highly successful summer season, MMW is gearing up for a busy fall, offering additional workshops through October, as well as providing professional certificate and masters degree programs in photography, film and new media.
