Exhibition: Peter Turnley Photographs, June 7-30
Opening Reception: Tuesday, June 8, 6:30-8pm

ROCKPORT – Maine Media Workshops welcomes the community to the inaugural exhibition at the new Maine Media Gallery, located in the just-renovated Shepherd Building in Rockport Village. Kicking off the gallery’s 2010 season will be an exhibition featuring photographs by internationally renowned photojournalist Peter Turnley, on view June 7-30.  A public reception for this exhibition will take place Tuesday, June 8 from 6:30 – 8 PM, followed by a slide presentation by Turnley in Union Hall.

Turnley is a photojournalist known for documenting the human condition and world affairs. Over the past two decades, he has traveled to over ninety countries and covered nearly every major news event of international significance. His photographs have been featured on the cover of Newsweek more than forty times. In conjunction with the Maine Media Workshops, he leads workshops on street photography and the photo-essay in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Seville, Calcutta, and Provence.

This exhibition marks the first time visitors will experience Maine Media’s brand-new gallery space in Rockport Village. Though the school’s main campus is currently located at 70 Camden Street, just up the hill from the harbor, the Village was the school’s original home when it was founded in 1973. The renovated Shepherd Building will also provide up to nine additional classrooms for educational programs.

“We are excited for the community to see these new MMW facilities and for the school to play such a prominent role in the revitalization of Rockport Village,” says MMW President, Charles Altschul. “It’s also fitting that Peter Turnley is opening this new season. Not only does his work represent the highest level of commitment to photojournalistic work, but he is also a long-time faculty member and friend of the school.”

Maine Media Workshops & College is a non-profit educational organization offering year-round workshops and college programs for photographers, filmmakers, and media artists.

Maine Media Gallery is on the first floor of the Shepherd Building, 18 Central Street, Rockport Village. Union Hall is just down the street at 2 Central Street. This event is free and open to the public.
