MFA Graduate Opens Maine Media Gallery Season
ROCKPORT, Maine - The photographic work of recent Maine Media College MFA graduate, Kim DePaul, is celebrated with an exhibition and artist’s reception at Maine Media Gallery, Friday, April 29, from 6:30 – 8pm in Rockport Village.
Creating collage and assemblage incorporating Kallitypes, tintype, inkjet and photo transfer, Kim explores a long-kept family secret in her thesis project, “Between the Lines.”
Kim explains, “My process begins with a collection of elements: memories, imagery, writing, objects. I see the layering of paper and photographs as being similar to the way our mind organizes memory at different depths, over one another, constantly shifting. It is in this layering and re-layering, the combining and recombining, the telling and retelling that I finally understand that I am no longer telling my family’s stories that were hidden away eighty years ago, I am telling my story.”
Howard Greenberg, Chair of the MFA program at Maine Media College comments, “The faculty encouraged Kim to think of herself as an artist first and to utilize the photographic medium as a means to her specific aims. Kim quickly went on to produce highly original and evocative narrative pieces, rich in appearance and imbued with layered meaning. Her development in the program wonderfully reflects one of the primary goals of the MFA program: To hold above concerns external to the individual artist, his or her unique visual voice.”
“Between the Lines” will be on display through May 1. Sponsored in part by Maine. The magazine this exhibition is free and open to the public. The Maine Media Gallery is on the first floor of the Shepherd Building, 18 Central Street, Rockport Village.
