ROCKPORT, Maine -- For the fourth consecutive year, the Maine Media Workshops brings Jeff Rosenheim, Curator, Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to the Midcoast for one of his captivating lectures.
On July 19 at 4pm at the Strand Theatre in Rockland, Rosenheim will give a special presentation focusing on the legacy and achievement of the extraordinary street photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009). This event includes an in-depth, illustrated talk about Levitt's camera work, as well as a rare screening of her 1948 film, "In the Street", a fourteen-minute documentary of Spanish Harlem.
Helen Levitt is known for capturing the street life of her native New York from the late 1930s through the 1990s. Drawing influence from the work of photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, and Ben Shahn, she produced an astonishing number of powerful images during her career, but remained little-known up until as late as 1991 when a traveling national retrospective of her work was organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
A leading figure in the world of photography and the preeminent authority on Walker Evans, Rosenheim has lectured extensively in the U.S. and abroad, and has taught at Columbia University, NYU, and Bard College.
