ROKPORT, Maine – Maine Media Workshops invites the community to a series of Monday afternoon summer presentations on some of the great photographers of the 20th Century. All lectures, presentations and discussions begin at 4pm in the Union Hall Theatre at 2 Central Street in Rockport Village. Admission is free.

As an introduction to the lecture series, Inside & Personal June 13 features Jim Hughes and Tim Whelan engaging in a wide-ranging conversation about some of the great image makers of the last century. Jim is a longtime editor of photo magazines and author of books on photographers. Tim has run a renowned photography bookstore in Rockport for nearly 20 years, now a part of the Maine Media Gallery.

June 20, Michael Komenecky, Chief Curator at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland will show highlights of the museum’s current exhibition Paul Caponigro: The Hidden Presence of Places and join Tim Whelan in a discussion about this master photographer’s life work.

Back by popular demand this year will be a July 18 screening of the film showing Arnold Newman at work photographing protégé Gregory Heisler. Following the screening, panelists Michael Komanecky, Emily Schiffer, 2010 winner of the Arnold Newman Prize and renowned photographer Ryszard Horowitz discuss the life and work of Newman, a great friend to the Workshops.

The legendary Ernst Haas was another photography master and long-time instructor at the school. Monday, August 15, Susan Danly of the Portland Museum of Art and Maine Media’s Brenton Hamilton will discuss the museum’s Ernst Haas Memorial Collection of works by photographers including George Tice, Maggie Steber and Elizabeth Opalenik, and Haas’ influence on the art form.

The series concludes August 22 with a presentation from Jim Hughes with Tim Whelan on the life and career of W. Eugene Smith titled Shadow and Substance.
