ROCKPORT – A series of exhibitions and events in August will celebrate the life and accomplishments of renowned portrait photographer Arnold Newman (1918-2006), whose deep connection to midcoast Maine was defined largely by the 30-plus summers he spent teaching at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport.
In conjunction with the first award of the new Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture, Maine Media Workshops and the Farnsworth Museum have collaborated on this series of events to honor the master photographer, widely recognized as the “Father of Environmental Portraiture”.
From July 26 – August 14, The Influence of Arnold Newman will be on view at the Maine Media Gallery, 18 Central Street in Rockport Village. This exhibition features the work of fifteen artists who were all at one time Newman’s assistants and/or students, and later went on to become renowned photographers in their own right. A public reception for this exhibition will be held Tuesday, August 10 from 6:30-8pm.
On August 14 at 2pm, Maine Media will present a piece derived from Arnold's lecture entitled "What is a Portrait", from his last presentation at the Workshops in the summer of 2005. Following the presentation, members of the MMW faculty will discuss the impact of Arnold Newman’s work in the context of 20th century photography and his role as mentor and teacher. This event will take place in Union Hall, at 2 Central Street in Rockport Village.
Also on August 14, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Emily Schiffer, the winner of this year’s Arnold Newman Prize, will open at the Farnsworth Museum. The Arnold Newman Prize was offered through the 2009 Photo Annual competition of Photo District News, and recognizes an individual for their innovative approach to photographic portraiture. The prize is sponsored by the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation, with support from Maine Media Workshops, the American Society of Media Photographers, and Photo District News. This exhibition will be on view at the Farnsworth Museum, located at 16 Museum Street in Rockland, through January 2011.
