Cinematographers in Spotlight at Maine Media Gallery
ROCKPORT, Maine – Maine Media Workshops welcomes the community to the opening reception of an exhibition of photographs, rarely seen outside of Hollywood, on view at Maine Media Gallery July 5, from 6:30 – 8pm. Presented in association with the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), the show is comprised of images made by over 30 members of that venerable film society.
Cinematographers are accustomed to viewing the world through the lens of a motion picture camera, but many are also accomplished still photographers. This exhibition showcases the fine art photography of the top cinematographers working in film today.
Many past and present Maine Media Workshops’ film faculty are ASC members with work in the exhibition, including: Russell Carpenter (Titanic), Richard Crudo (American Pie), Steven Fierberg (Love and Other Drugs), Robbie Greenberg (Free Willy), Francis Kenny (Justified), Jacek Laskus (Parting Glances), Isidore Mankofsky (The Muppet Movie), Robert Primes (Bird on a Wire), Dante Spinotti (Heat), John Toll (Braveheart), Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deer Hunter) and more.
Richard Crudo, ASC says “Our art form is different than still photography in many ways, but both disciplines share a vital purpose. As cinematographers, our creative process allows us to produce an indelible record of who we are and how we see the world. Though the tools we use - light, composition and movement - have remained consistent, we always strive to apply them in ways that are both unique and revealing.”
Chartered in 1919, ASC membership is by invitation, based on an individual’s body of work. Currently, the membership roster comprises 302 cinematographers who hail from about 20 different countries. The ASC is been committed to educating aspiring filmmakers and others about the art and craft of cinematography.
The exhibition runs July 1 – 27. Maine Media Gallery is on the first floor of the Shepherd Building, 18 Central Street, Rockport Village. Gallery hours: Monday through Friday from 11am – 6 pm; Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 – 8pm; Saturdays from 9am – 3pm; Sundays from 11am – 3pm. Sponsored in part by Maine. The magazine this exhibition is free and open to the public.
