A fresh look at photographing people

Susan OptonExtraordinary imagery is often a result of experimentation.  This class focuses on a conceptual approach to portraiture and emphasizes the importance of experimentation. Students learn to think as directors by creating commonplace and outrageous situations in which their subjects are free to reveal themselves – or not.

Slide presentations provide participants with an art-historical context for thinking about portrait making. Group discussions address the psychology of light and composition, the impact of situation and gesture, and the subtle use of cliché.  With this newfound knowledge, students explore how to use photographic processes and modes of presentation to best express their ideas.

Students photograph on a daily basis either in the classroom or out in a variety of Maine’s unique locations. Participants are encouraged to work on individual portrait projects, and work together to help each other refine their focus. Coursework includes group and individual assignments.

Students should have an understanding of their camera settings and experience working with studio/location lights.
