Shoot compelling images that tell a story and do it in Crete! In the Crete Documentary Workshop you will venture out each day to photograph an area, a segment of the culture or a person, depending on your documentary interests.

Learn how to approach the local baker or the woman on the stoop drinking coffee with her neighbors. Create a documentary project with a family of farmers or fishermen and hone your skill in taking intimate, well-crafted photographs that will grab the viewer while capturing the essence of the subject.

Greek-American Stella Johnson has spent the last 3 years photographing and teaching workshops in Crete and has made invaluable contacts for her students. She teaches how to: develop a personal style of shooting, see and use all sources of light, and abstract the details necessary to make strong compositions. Stella meets privately and during class critiques each day to review images, share her professional experiences working on stories in remote destinations, and give insight into what it takes to develop the strong relationships necessary to work on long-term projects.

While this workshop is for slightly less-experienced photographers who want to hone their eye and jump-start a documentary project, all students must be savvy travelers who are knowledgeable about their camera gear and digital work-flow and who are able to solve technical problems in the field. This is an ideal workshop to bring along a spouse, son or daughter or partner. Companion supplement is only $150.

Seville's Streets, Easter Procession, and Flamenco Workshop takes students into the heart and soul of Seville, Spain, a city full of winding medieval lanes, secluded stone plazas and a fascinating blend of Islamic, Roman, and Renaissance architecture.

This workshop will focus on Seville at Easter during its week of religious processions known as the Semana Santa, a centuries old religious event where tens of thousands of religious Spaniards clad in traditional costumes march through the streets of Seville.

Peter Turnley, one of the pre-imminent visual communicators and world-traveling photographers of our time, is a tremendous teacher who has vast experience teaching overseas workshops. He is a disciple of Henri-Cartier-Bresson and passionately encourages his students to hone their attention to the “decisive moments” of everyday life. Most importantly, he will help each student revel in the joy and wonderment of observation and seeing.

Students will spend approx. 3-4 hours each day in class with lectures, presentations, photo critiques of daily work, and in discussions with Peter and other members of Spain’s photographic community. At least half of each day students walk the streets of Seville with the aim of creating a photo essay based around a self-chosen visual theme.

The Semana Santa is an emotional and a vivid visual experience that captivates and inspires a photographer's heart and eye. It is also an ideal workshop to bring along a spouse, son or daughter or partner. Companion supplement is $150.
