Stephen McCarthy is a director of photography with thirty years of experience in non-fiction filmmaking. His work appears regularly in prime time documentary series including PBS's American Experience, American Masters, Frontline, Nova, Nova: Science Now and P.O.V.

Stephen's recent credits include the Peabody- and Emmy-award-winning "My Lai", two seasons of HBO Family's Emmy-nominated series "Masterclass" series by Oscar-winning producer/directors Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon, "Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr," and Nova's "Cracking Your Genetic Code." Mr. McCarthy's photography is also featured in "Inside The Goat Rodeo Sessions"  and "Clinton", a four-hour biography of the 42nd president which joined American Experience's The Presidents series in 2012.  Forthcoming projects include "War of the Worlds," - his 25th film for the American Experience - and "Africans In America: Many Rivers to Cross," the latest PBS series presented by Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.   Productions in progress include PBS series based on "The Emperor of All Maladies" by Siddhartha Mukherjee and "Your Inner Fish" by Neil Shubin.

Stephen is a visiting lecturer on cinematography at Boston University, Rhode Island School of Design and MIT's graduate program in science writing. He lives in Boston.
