Richard Klug
Richard Klug is a Director and Cinematographer with more than 20 years experience in documentaries, commercials, cable programming and interactive media production.
Richard has directed and photographed commercials for clients such as Gillette, McDonald's, Hewlett-Packard, Hasbro, Volkswagen, and Ocean Spray. Richard is known for his tabletop and live action commercial work, but has also worked on interactive videos, long format documentaries, museum installation pieces and sponsored films for universities, corporations and cities. Richard’s portfolio includes work in 35mm and Super 16mm film, as well as Arri Alexa. RED MX, Phantom Flex, Canon DSLR and other high definition video formats.
A graduate of Beloit College in Wisconsin, Richard began his career writing, shooting and editing corporate films in the United States, Africa, and the Middle East. He began directing commercials in the prestigious Minneapolis market. When he came to Boston, he was a partner in two start-up companies. Richard was also a part of production companies in New York and Toronto before joining Redtree Productions of Boston in 1994.
Richard wrote, produced and directed “Asking the Questions that Matter,” a museum installation film for the newsroom of The Christian Science Monitor, the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper. The film won Gold awards at the Hugo, Cindy and Cine Golden Eagle Film Festivals.
Richard has also worked as Directory of Photography on 4 films for the acclaimed documentarian Mary Mazzio, including the feature, “Ten9Eight,” which played nationwide in AMC Theaters. Richard shot Mary’s latest feature-length film, “Apple Pushers,” which premiered at this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival.
The commercials Richard has directed and photographed have won many awards, including the One Show, Communication Arts, the Telly Awards, the International Film & TV Festival of New York, Boston’s Hatch Awards and Minneapolis’ The Show.
Richard lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts with his wife, Kate. They have two sons, Nate and Sam.
