David Beard is an award-winning reporter and editor. He directs editorial operations for Boston.com, the website of The Boston Globe newspaper and one of the biggest newspaper-based websites in the United States. He founded and contributes to the site's Green Blog, focusing on economic and environmental sustainability. He has led the site's expansion into Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Boston.com efforts in the past year have resulted in its first two regional Emmys and two EPpy awards, as well as numerous awards for its popular photography blog, The Big Picture.
Before Boston.com, Beard was an assistant managing editor, regional editor, and deputy international editor for the Globe. In that foreign news position, he developed a worldwide network of stringers to complement the paper's then-roster of foreign correspondents. Beard has reported from nearly two dozen countries, much of that during a 10-year career with The Associated Press, where he also worked on the news cooperative's International Desk, contributed to the AP Network News radio service, and briefly covered the United Nations. He speaks fluent Spanish.
When not reporting or editing, Beard also teaches at the Harvard Extension School and has lectured on online media at several U.S. universities and in Mexico, China, and Barbados. He is an avid reader, runner, swimmer, and baseball and soccer fan. He plays the trombone and enjoys reggae, ska, jazz, and rock en espanol.
