Filmmaker Michael Roemer presents two in his collection of films at Maine Media Workshops’ Union Hall Theatre Wednesday June 22 and Thursday June 23 at 8pm.
Born in Berlin, Germany in 1928, Michael Roemer has produced, directed and written dozens of films. These have been shown and won prizes at the Venice, London, New York, Cannes, Toronto and Bergano film festivals. An Emmy award nominee, Michael continues to teach at Yale University.
This summer, on the occasion of the DVD release of seven of Michael’s films, he comes to Maine Media to screen two of these films, shot 20 years apart and representing very different aspects of our lives.
Showing June 22, “Nothing But A Man” (released in 1964) follows the life of Duff Anderson. While working on an African-American section gang in a small Alabama town in the 1960s, Duff falls in love with Josie, the local preacher's daughter. Racial, economic and psychological pressures come close to destroying their young marriage.
In “Vengeance is Mine”, released in 1984, we meet Jo, a woman in her twenties, who was adopted by a Catholic family and comes home to try, one last time, to heal the rift between her mother and herself. Happenstance enmeshes her in the troubled lives of a couple next door and their ten-year-old daughter – an involvement that is so unconscious on her part, she intervenes in their lives-with consequences that stop just short of tragedy. This film screens June 23.
A Q&A session with Michael follows each screening, The community is encouraged to attend both evenings as the discussion bridges both presentations. Admission is free. Union Hall Theatre is location at 2 Central Street in Rockport Village.
