Maine Media Workshops + College is pleased to announce the winners of its Dreams photo, video, and writing competition. More than 1,100 images, videos, and writing entries were submitted from image-makers and story tellers from around the world. Over $9,000 in prizes will be awarded in a special ceremony at the Maine Media Workshops + College party at B&H Photo Video Pro Audio, in New York City on October 23rd.  There will be an exhibition of the winning entries at the Maine Media Gallery in Rockport, Maine in early 2014.

The 24 contest winners are a diverse group of professional and recreational artists who hail from six countries and eleven different states within the U.S.; some as far away as Brazil, Hong Kong, India and Singapore.

  

Contest Winners

There were 360 total entrants in the contest.  They come from 20 countries (incl. U.S.) and from 36 states in the U.S. There are 29 awards in total - 3 Grand Prize (1 each Photo. Film, Writing), 15 Honorable Mentions (3 each photo, Film, Writing) and 11 Curator's Choice Awards (4 Photo, 4 Film, 3 Writing). The 29 awards were won by 24 individuals; 4 individuals won multiple awards. The 24 winners come from 6 countries (incl. U.S.) and from 11 states in the U.S.

In Photo, there are 10 Awards, won by 9 individuals. Maria Kanevskaya won 2 Curator's Choice Awards.

In Film, there are 10 Awards, won by 8 individuals. Anshul Joshi won an Honorable Mention and a Curator's Choice Award.  Mike Silva won 2 Honorable Mentions.

In Writing, there are 9 Awards, won by 7 individuals. Celia Bellinger won 3 Honorable Mentions.

One repeat winner from Spirit of Place Contest  is Robert Moran.  He won the Dreams Grand Prize Photography, and in Spirit of Place he won 4 Honorable Mentions in the Photo-Adult Single Image contest.

For centuries and across cultures, artists have represented the world as it may be envisioned through ephemeral images of inner visions, fantasies, mysteries and the unreal.  This contest is an opportunity for our international community of photographers, filmmakers and writers of all ages to present their representations of dreams to a distinguished panel of judges.

The contest was sponsored by B&H Photo Video & Pro Audio, Longfellow Books, and Maine Magazine, and ran from late June through September, 2013. The competition’s award ceremony will be held in New York City on October 23rd, celebrating Maine Media Workshops + College’s 40th Anniversary at our annual PhotoPlus Party held at 7pm at B&H Photo Video & Pro Audio. Contest winners will have their work exhibited at the Maine Media Gallery in Rockport, in Spring of 2014. A portion of the contest’s proceeds will fund scholarships for Maine Media students.

Founded in 1973 in Rockport, Maine as Maine Photographic Workshops, Maine Media Workshops + College has evolved into a creative center for visual storytellers across many disciplines. Offering immersive photography, filmmaking and multimedia courses in one-day, one and two-week workshops, a one-year professional certificate program and a three-year MFA degree program, Maine Media attracts more than 1,600 students each year from all over the world.
