Maine Media Workshops + College is pleased to present our Annual Photo and Video contest, sponsored by B&H Photo Video. At MMW+C, we believe in the power of stories to change the way people think about the world. We teach and inspire storytellers of all ages and walks of life, encouraging and fostering the use of everything from historical processes to cutting-edge technology in order to communicate narratives. We are excited to partner with B&H, the source of for all things digital and manual in the image making community, to bring you this contest. Together, we are excited to see the stories you want to tell and what they will say about our world.

Portfolio: $45 for one portfolio of eight images through July 27, 2015. $50 for one portfolio of eight images after July 27, 2015. Each additional image will be $40 regardless of the submission date. Contest ends Midnight PST September 10, 2015.

Single Image Categories: $25 to enter up to four images through July 27, 2015. $30 to enter up to four images after July 27, 2015. Each additional image will be $5 regardless of the submission date. Contest ends Midnight PST September 10, 2015.

Photo judges are Michael Clark, JP Caponigro, Drew Gurian, Ron Haviv, and Aline Smithson.

B&H Photo-Video, Canon, and Sony have teamed up to give away $11,000 in equipment and gift cards. 

One Photography Grand Prize will be awarded, along with a 1st Place prize and a Runner Up prize for each Photo category.

Winners will be announced in October 2015.

All winning entries will be posted on the Maine Media web site. 

Winners may not receive cash in lieu of contest prizes. Winners can, upon providing written notice, transfer a prize to another party, i.e., in the event a winner cannot attend a workshop.

 

JUDGING

All entries will be anonymously reviewed throughout the Contest. Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, artistic merit and relevance to the individual category theme, as well as the overall theme of Creative Storytelling. 

Submitted photographs must not, in the sole and absolute discretion of Sponsors, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Submissions deemed by Sponsors to be inappropriate will be disqualified.

Each judge will determine the 1st Place Winner and Runner-Up for their assigned category. Together, these judges will choose the Photography Grand Prize Winner from all photography categories.

 

We are pleased to announce this distinguished panel of judges who will review all work and select the winners.

 

JP Caponigro- Landscape

Renowned landscape photographer and passionate educator. JP was one of the early pioneers of digital imaging and remains a technical master who is highly sought after for his workshops in which he imparts not only creative inspiration but also foundational lessons. 

Michael Clark-Action & Aventure

Outdoor photographer specializing in adventure sports, travel and landscape photography. He places himself within the action to capture raw, intense images of rock climbers, mountaineers, kayakers, mountain bikers and big-wave surfers. His clients include Apple, Adobe, RedBull, 20th Century Fox, Black Diamond, National Geographic, and a host of other outdoor publications.

Drew Gurian- Commercial Advertising 

New York based photographer specializing in portraits that focus on the intersection of music and photography. This aesthetic has translated into commercial work for brands like RedBull and Reebok, as well as editorial work for publications like Rolling Stone Magazine, VICE, and the New York Times. Drew is also a contracted photographer for the Associated Press.

Ron Haviv-Photo Journalism 

Emmy nominated, award winning photojournalist and a cofounder of VII Agency. Over three decades, Ron has covered wars from the Balkans to Afghanistan, creating an unflinching record of the injustices of war. His photographs have not only raised awareness about human rights issues around the globe, but have also served as evidence in the conviction of war criminals at the Hague. 

Aline Smithson-Portfolio

Fine art photographer and founder of Lenscratch. Aline has won numerous awards, frequently acts as a juror and curator for gallery exhibits, and has been published in magazines like PDN, Silvershotz, and Visura. Aline’s body of work is comprised of a number of highly inventive projects, ranging from vintage-inspired painted photographs to photographic re-interpretations of Whistler’s famous painting, “Portrait of the Painter’s Mother.” 

 

 All decisions made by the judges are final.

 

 

 

DEADLINES & NOTIFICATION

The contest opens on June 29, 2015 and closes at midnight PST on August 23, 2015.

All entries must be received before midnight PST on September 10, 2015 to be eligible.

Discounted fees for early submission ends July 27, 2015.

Winners will be notified in October 2015.

Winning entries will be posted online at www.mainemedia.edu/contest in October 2015. 

Winners List. To receive names of the winners by U.S. mail, please mail a self-addressed stamped envelope to: B&H Foto & Electronics Corp., Attn: Maine Media Annual Workshop Photo & Video Contest, 440 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10001. Any Winners List request must be received by B&H within one (1) year of the date the Contest is conducted.

ELIGIBILITY

This Contest is only open to legal residents of the United States and Canada, excluding Quebec, who are at least 18 years old as of the date of entry, except officers, directors, members, and employees of the Sponsors, the judging organization, or any other party associated with the development or administration of this Contest, and the immediate family (i.e., parents, children, siblings, spouse), and persons residing in the same household, as such individuals. This Contest is void where prohibited by law. Sponsors may, in their sole discretion, request an affidavit from winners, to confirm that they meet all eligibility criteria.

  

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

All images must be submitted electronically through our web site at www.mainemedia.edu/contest/creativestorytelling.  No mail-in entries will be accepted.

Submitted photographs must not, in the sole and absolute discretion of Sponsors, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Submissions deemed by Sponsors to be inappropriate will be disqualified.

Image Format

Entries may originate in any format including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints -- so long as they are submitted electronically.

  • JPG format
  • 72 ppi resolution
  • 1,280 pixels on the longest side
  • less than 2MB total size

Finalists will be asked to submit a high-resolution file of at least 300dpi at 8x10 inches. Maine Media Workshops reserves the right to disqualify contestants who are unable to provide a high-resolution file.

 

 

 

USE RIGHTS

Entry Ownership/Entrant Agreements. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph. Entrants retain full ownership and copyrights to their submission(s). However, by entering the Contest, entrants grant Sponsors a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such submission, in any media formats through any media channels. Entrants also agree: (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that any claims related to this Contest shall be resolved individually without resort to any form of class action and that awards, shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred in entering the Contest, and shall not include incidental or consequential damages or attorneys fees; and (c) that any actual or perceived ambiguities in these Rules shall be interpreted by Sponsors in their sole discretion.

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant Maine Media Workshops a license.

 

PRIVACY

We respect your privacy. Maine Media Workshops will not sell, rent or exchange your e-mail address.

 

IDENTITY OF ENTRANTS

In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of an entrant, entries will have been deemed to have been submitted by the e-mail account holder of the entrant. For these purposes, an e-mail account holder shall mean the natural person assigned to such e-mail account by the internet access or online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with such e-mail account. Any issues regarding the identity of the holder of an e-mail account shall be resolved by Sponsors in their sole discretion. If, for any reason, a winner cannot be contacted within one (1) week of selection after reasonable attempts by Sponsors, an alternate winner will be selected from the remaining eligible entries.

 

LEGAL CONDITIONS

Winner agrees that any disputes that arise in connection with this Contest will be governed by the laws of the State of New York and heard exclusively in a court of applicable jurisdiction in the County and State of New York irrespective of any choice of law provisions to the contrary. 

 

THIRD PARTY RELEASES/LICENSES

Upon request by Maine Media Workshops, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed written personal release from all persons who appear in the photograph submitted, authorizing us to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entry in connection with and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter.

In addition, upon request by Maine Media Workshops, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed written license from the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork or other copyrighted material that appears in the photograph entry, authorizing us to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the photograph in connection with any promotions of the Contest. Failure to provide such releases upon request may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.

 

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

Sponsors are not responsible for incomplete entries or for failure to receive entries due to transmission or technical failures of any kind including but not limited to malfunction of any network, hardware, or software, whether originating with the sender or with Sponsors, or for any human error, lost or delayed data transmission, or for any other error or malfunction which results in an entry not being received by Sponsors, being received in an untimely manner, or in a garbled or otherwise unintelligible entry being received by Sponsors. By participating in the Contest the winner agrees that Sponsors will have no responsibility whatsoever for losses or damage of any kind resulting or arising from the acceptance, possession, or use of the prize and further agrees to release and hold harmless Sponsors, their agents and representatives, from any losses, damages, claims, and/or liabilities arising in connection therewith. Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest by entering or voting constitutes participants consent to: (1) the publication of his or her name in any media for commercial or promotional purposes without limitation or further compensation subject to Sponsor’s Privacy Policy; and (2) to the use of his or her email address for marketing purposes. 

 

RIGHT TO MODIFY, CANCEL OR SUSPEND CONTEST

Sponsors may cancel, suspend, modify, discontinue, or terminate the Contest at any time without notice in the event they determine, in their sole discretion, that such action is necessary.  In their sole discretion, Sponsors may disqualify from the Contest any person they determine, in their sole discretion, to have attempted to or actually tampered or otherwise abused any aspect of the Contest. Sponsors will periodically audit Submissions to ensure compliance with these Rules.
