A fine art and commercial photographer, Jill began with a focus on still lives and landscapes using a variety of alternative process techniques for which she has achieved world-wide recognition. This work is showcased in her first book, “Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes” which won the Golden Light Award for Best Technical Book of 2002. Ten years ago, with a custom built portable darkroom, Jill began making wet plate collodion portraits of immigrants who came to New York City from around the world. As a protest against the profiling and prejudice, Jill tributes the “New Americans” who enrich the hosting culture with their own foreign experience. The resulting body of work is to be a section in her new book, “Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Procesess: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques” published by Focal Press and has a Summer 2013 store date.  This will coincide with a 3 month exhibition on Ellis Island as part of the opening of a new wing of their museum.

Jill has taught handcoloring and non-silver techniques at schools in New York City and across the country as well as Scandanavia, Europe and South America. Her personal work is in collections and has appeared in many magazines throughout the world. Jill’s commercial clients include Fortune Magazine, New York Times Magazine, Kodak, Hasselblad, Nikon, Penguin Putnam, Inc., St. Martin’s Press, LIFE, and many others. Her personal work has appeared in Camera Art’s, Hasselblad’s FORUM Magazine, Nikon World, Camera & Darkroom Techniques, ZOOM, Shutterbug, PDN and others.

Jill’s work was one of 42 images selected from thousands on file with the city through the HERE IS NEW YORK Archive to commemorate the fifth anniversary of 911. Jill has been a “Legend Behind the Lens” for Nikon, a representative for Lowepro and SanDisk and is on the board of Freestyle Photographics.

Connie Imboden’s photographs are represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,  National Museum of American Art, Washington D.C., Philadelphia Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran Museum, Washington D.C., Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France, Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany and many other public and private collections in Europe and the Americas. Her work has been exhibited in an extensive range of group and solo shows at galleries and museums in England, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Spain, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile and the United States.

Her first book of images, Out of Darkness, won the Silver Medal in Switzerland’s “Schönste Bucher Aus Aller Welt (Most Beautiful Book in the World)” award in 1993.  In 2009, Insight Editions published her latest monograph entitled “Reflections: 25 Years of Photography by Connie Imboden” , which includes a preface by Julian Cox, forward by John Wood, and introduction by Arthur Ollman.  Her work has also been documented in catalogs accompanying solo shows at the Museum of the photographic Arts, San Diego California, Museo Alejandro Otero, Caracas, Venezuela, and the Galerie Municipale du Chateau d’ Eau, Toulouse, France.  Imboden’s work has been featured in such periodicals as Focus, Aperture, American Photo, Camera and Darkroom, FotoPractica, Photographies, PHOTOgraphics, Photo Metro, Photonews, Photo Review, Black and White, Ag, View Camera, Inked, Vis A Vis, and Zoom Magazine.

Imboden currently teaches photography at the Maryland Institute, where her experience as a photographer began, and at the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport, ME.  Additionally she has done workshops at the: International Center For Photography in New York City,  Center for Photography at Woodstock, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown in Massachusetts, The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, Recontres Internationales de la Photographie, Santa Fe Photo Workshops, Recontres Internationales de la Photographie Workshop, Arles,  France, The School for Photographic Studies in Prague, Czech Republic and The Union of Arab Photographers at the United Arab Emirates.
